My feet are covered in blisters.
I'm sure that there is a strategy for easing yourself into summer shoes, for walking in sandals without tearing all of the skin off of your feet. Over the past ten years in which I pick my shoes out for myself, I haven't discovered it.
I don't often think about what the day will look like from my feet's point of view. I just throw them on if they match my shirt and head out the door. Yesterday, that meant my summer sandals–still holding strong after three years, but with completely flat, plastic bottoms–would be walking me around town for miles.
Joe & I decided to take advantage of a sunny Saturday to explore a new part of town, walking North from our apartment instead of into town, like we always do. Going North means we actually leave Nancy & enter the cluster of tiny towns & urban sprawl that surround it. There is more asphalt, more traffic, more graffiti & more huge shopping centers.
We were able to walk along the canal for most of the trip, surrounding ourselves with trees & ducks & families enjoying the sunshine instead of the winding town roads & cracking asphalt. I could feel my arms burning a bit & was excited that my tan would be a bit deeper before we head down to Montpellier.
Our journey did have a purpose other than walking the canal, but that turned out to be my favorite part. After that, we were weaving through industrial complexes & parking lots to reach the "Super U", the closest thing to a Wal*Mart that I've ever seen in France. My friend told me that she'd found a big bottle of gin there for seven euros. Reason enough to check it out, since a gin & tonic at a café is seven euros.
We didn't want to just grab gin & run, so we bounced around the aisles for a bit, admiring the large organic sections that we want to get back to, the selection of flour, the Mexican food (!!). We're definitely making another trip back there before a friend comes to visit from the States, stocking up so that our week of food experimentation is less expensive.
So we got G&T supplies & a big thing of juice & headed home, back along the canal. While Joe stopped into the Asian market to get coconut milk for dinner, I pressed on. Today was my designated Megan Goes into the World on Her Own day. I was shopping, & I was going to love being by myself. I have to force myself to do things like this on occasion, & I am starting to enjoy it.
One of my favorite French people, Montaigne, the father of memoir, enjoyed the Latin phrase "in solis sis tibi turba locis." In solitude, be company to yourself. It's not what he meant really–going shopping alone & thus being surrounded by loads of commercialism & other people–but I do try to use the time to think about what I really want from life, what I'm doing, if I'm satisfied.
I also used the time to realize that I don't need another pair of jeans or sunglasses or shoes. Victory. I just got the essentials that I was looking for. Plus a REALLY pink lipstick. It's getting warm; I had to do something to celebrate (other than buy gin).
So I slowed down in town & explored a lot of shops that I'd never seen before, on streets I never turn onto. I let myself have a few hours before considering going home. In fact, I didn't think about going home until I realized that I was limping around, trying to walk only on the outside of my feet.
It was a long walk back. The space between where my toes stop and my arch begins was swelling at an alarming pace. I was sure that there was no skin left on my heels. My pinkie toe was lying on its side, defeated & trapped under the strap of my sandal. I spent the rest of the day taking as few steps as possible.
I washed my feet three times & still haven't gotten all the black off of the heels. I'm not good at sandals. Maybe I do need new shoes after all... with arch support & more than a 1/4-inch piece of plastic between me & the sidewalk. Maybe I just need to give my feet time to thaw after a long winter trapped in hosiery & socks. I've been walking around with naked legs again, in skirts with–GASP–no tights. The air felt odd after so much time locked away. I'm sure it's similar for the poor little feet.
Today, it's socks & small boots even though the temperature will be in the 70s (or 22C, which sounds not warm at all). At least I have my new shorts to keep my legs cool & little pads to keep my steps soft.

I’ve gotten a bit materialistic over the last few days, so I thought I’d create a really visual post.
Mom and I spent some time (read “most of the day”) shopping. She gave me tons of help, replacing underwear that I shrank in the outdated drier at my rental house and jeans that had become see-through from too much wear.
She also helped me stop up on some new clothes for the great weather we’ll meet when we get to France. I got tops that look exactly like Paris in Spring. I’ve noticed that my style has gotten more classic and much more feminine.
The trend that I adore right now is the decorative appliqués and feminine flourishes on tank tops. I’ve been struggling to find anything that works for my body type. My chest, well, exists, and the tops are made more for flat-chested girls, those 1920s flapper bodies that are still the model for fashion design.
I found some tops that work—frills and a bit of flash, floral prints that always catch my eye. (Mom found this one.) There’s just enough shape in them to flatter the parts of my body that I love (since I’m learning to do that): shoulders and hips.
We did a bit of wedding shopping, too. Unfortunately, the shoes I got for the wedding are too small. I’ve been looking for wedding shoes, but I wasn’t wowed by anything. The peacock feathers have given this wedding a fun flare, so I thought
Score. Deep blue pointy-toed heels that are only about an inch or two with support…perfect for a whole day in heels. When we popped into Icing, Mom found the perfect purse with a vintage feel to it, also on sale: a golden, rectangular design that will actually hold everything.

When we got back from our shopping expedition, another purchase was waiting on me. I'll put out a warning:
I am tired of tampons: of the mess, of the cotton, of the waste of materials, of the purse and pockets the require. I'm making every effort to be sustainable and conscious of my impact. I'm also very conscious of the impact "female sanitary products" have on my wallet each month.
Enter the Diva Cup. The concept has been around for 75 years, and this company made it modern: top-grade silicon, hypoallergenic, sanitary and budget-friendly. For less than $30, I am set until it wears out, until I have a baby or until I turn 30–whatever comes first.
It holds up to one ounce and, even though your flow feels like a disaster some days, that's approximately 12 hours (that's right) of coverage. That means for an entire day gallivanting around Europe or an entire night of sound sleep, I don't have to worry about leaks, infections or allergic reactions.
It's a bit like getting your life back. So thanks, Mom and Dad for the financial (and fashion) assistance. I don't say that enough, and I get more than my fair share between wedding plans and loan help. I'm blessed with parents that instilled a strong understanding of work ethic, budgeting and finding ways to help others. I may not come out ahead this summer with a bigger bank account, but my bills and debt are steadily dropping. (No thanks to Ball State's out-of-state tuition and my need for loans.)

So. We're down this far in the countdown for real. I will not have to go back and tack more numbers on. I will not have to talk about shoes anymore either... because I've ordered them.

So there we have it. I was really willing to blow $70 on satin pumps with hand-painted peacocks. They were to die for. This are cute, too. Less flashy. More wedding-ish. And more than $50 less. With shipping, these came to $17. Thanks, Etsy! Seriously, that site has become the first place I look for, well, anything.

187, or, holy shit February
That's right. It is February. That means it is seven months (and 7 days, really) until The Big Day. Ouch. There are moments of high stress, but I'm feeling really good about things.
All invitation supplies are in order, and I can't believe how much easier it is to have a local printer working on things... a REAL printer and not a copy center. It makes my heart happy. I'm looking forward to getting covered in glue, stressing about sticking things in straight, and spending more time than I should making sure that each invitation is perfect.
I want the look of the invites to be a surprise, but I will say that I hope the white "gel" pens we got at Hobby Lobby better write on their black card stock, WHICH the printer is cutting for me. Who knew? And for less than $100. (Ok, for now. I'm not letting myself get too set on this)
The to-do list for Spring Break is getting longer, especially when my reading assignments are figured in, but it's also putting a lot of things into perspective. Plus my bonus trip home this weekend will get one component of the day completely knocked out: bubbles. I got the labels to print on my roommate's computer, after much screaming and cursing trying to move it from a Mac to a PC.
Chloe doesn't know it yet, but we're spending some QT together, putting Megan & Joe labels on 150 bubble bottles, perfectly straight, which is tricky because they're shaped like test tubes and not the usual little jar.
Ok, the whole point of this post was to say that I think we've finally figured out the shoes... sort of. Mom did some digging, and found out that Payless dies and ships wedding shoes for free! The shoes are around $40, so the savings could be almost $20 a pair. Score! So here's the deal.
1. They're BOGO 1/2 off.
2. They offer a small selection of wedding shoes, died in 64 colors.
I think I'm going with the Catherine shoe, in their wedding collection. This is really random, but I found a great pair that matches the vintage-feel of everything on Etsy, sold by SlickBettie.... and they're my size!
So, moral of the story is: I'm asking the girls to order either the Audrey Payless wedding shoe or this cute little number my mom saw, also at Payless. I hope this is easy, since they're online or in the store! Here's a peak at what I think Chloe's favoring... I like!
P.S. Can't make it to Payless? Whatev's. Peep-toes are back with a vengeance, so there are similar styles out there.

An official wedding update:
1. Wedding shoes are too expensive, and therefore still a w0rk-in-progress.
2. I am coming home next Saturday to:
a. have my dad fix my car and
b. stick Megan & Joe labels on tubes of bubbles.
3. Our pre-cana is scheduled! May 1! When the hell am I going to move! Bahh!
Hopefully, this means that Joe will stay for the Sunday after pre-cana and help me move. What a big weekend.

With the dress long since decided on, I've started to get a bit antsy to doll myself up. I'm not big on wedding jewelry--will probably opt for my simple pearls, since they go so well with my dress. They're clean, and when I found this shoe, they fit right into that sleek, clean look that the wedding is taking on.
T
he Flash 647, which I first saw at the local bridal shop where I bought my dress, is the classic pump I was looking for. The peek-a-boo toe is soft with a bit of flash.
Ok, so it really just gives me an excuse to buy an awesome new nail polish.
I'm ordering the shoes for myself, and I know my mom wants a pair. Even if the bridal party doesn't want to order these, I'm hoping that they'll serve as the ideal. Obviously, I don't want the brown. They girls will wear black peek-a-boo pumps, and mine will be ivory.
