on paris: montmartre

~ ~

It is 9:21 p.m. Paris time. Joe is asleep in the bed next to me. I am frantically adding pictures & updating my friends & family, because my Skype isn't working & I don't know when I'll have WiFi again. (Internet cafés are outrageous!) My mind is burning, which is fine. Maybe it's chewing on those calorie-packed sandwiches we had for dinner... How I missed them! Tuna and mozzarella panini: a wonderful welcome back to Paris.

So obviously, we made it! The flight was long, but who can complain when you have no flight delays, no lost luggage and no phyiscal harm? Joe can, that's who. My poor husband's muscles are on fire. Our checked bags each weighed every ounce of their 50 pound allowance, & he dragged them up stairs, down to subways, out of subways & up 4 flights of stairs to our hotel room.

The picture above is of him recovering. He can't move from that spot. I am standing in the bathroom to take the picture, which means I was leaning against the toilet. Our luggage covers the floor that the double bed doesn't. To say this room is "economy" is generous, but what it lacks in size it makes up for in hospitality, location & significance: the spot we'll forever remember as our first night in France.

There were three hours of luggage-carrying & métro line-transferring before we arrived at the hotel, so we paused for showers & lunch before heading out into the big city. The emotions (missing home & being excited that this is almost "home" for a year...well, two hours from home) are still to sharp to get our whole day's adventures in one post.

I've updated the itinerary page with the day's activities. I'll expound on our Parisian adventures later. So for now, I'll leave you with this image–Sacre Coeur, which truly took our breath away. The holiest & most romantic place I can imagine.

More photos to come.

What's up next: Île de la Cité (Notre Dame & Sainte-Chappelle & on & on), Île St-Louis & a bit of Hemingway's Paris across the river.
