Day 20. Favorite romance book
I have a soft spot for Russians. I love romance–hence Jane Austen & the like on this list. That said, it's hard for me to get behind traditional romance novels. Picking my favorite was difficult, but then I remembered the Christmas season I spent curled up on my bed under the afghan Mom made when I was little, complete compelled by Leo Tolstoy.
"Anna Korenina" is one of my favorite novels of all time, an unconventional love story that can do nothing but break your heart & make you long for a stiff, Russian vodka to dull the pain. Nabokov agrees, calling it one of "the greatest love stories in world literature." Who could argue with another master of world literature?
Let's look at some of the subjects Powell's puts on their "Anna Korenina" page: didactic (admittedly not the BEST adjective, but it works here), married women, adultery, Russia, pre-Soviet Union, classics. Nothing is lacking.
The plot follows a path something like this. At times tiring in the Russian way, at times haltingly full of energy & emotion, you feel as if you're moving with each character, acting out each moment. I can only plead that you read it, before you put the (gorgeous) images from the film into your head. Let yourself create the characters & their world for yourself.
